A busy weekend for Vermin Racing Team as we entered into the BaTCC championship with Karlis Skirmanis heading the effort. Here is his race report. You can watch the race replays below.
Quali: Coming into the session I was dreading the issue of traffic. That fear was justified. Out of 5 flying laps, 3 were ruined due to traffic and one due to me forgetting to turn on ABS (You had to do that every time when coming out of pits). I qualified 15th, about 1.5 seconds slower than my fastest time in practice.
Race 1: Started off well, with me gaining a couple places into turn 1. At the end of lap 1 I made a bad mistake and crashed into the car ahead. I waited for him to recover and dropped down to 17th. After making a few overtakes and gaining positions due to accidents I was battling worth 10th place - the reverse grid pole position. After 3 laps of fierce but fair battling, a driver ran out of fuel and I gained a position. After that I stopped battling with the car ahead and just hang back to get pole position for race 2.
Race 2: Before race 2, there was a 30 minute break. During that I discussed start strategies with my friends. During that, one of my friends suggested starting with a hand brake instead of the regular brake. Unfortunately, either the clutch slipped or the hand brake failed and I got a false start which in this league meant resetting to pits. So instead of starting 1st I started 25th 24 seconds down from the next car. Due to incidents and some overtaking I recovered to 15th but could not do better. I was really disappointed as this was such a wasted opportunity. I feel sorry for my team and sponsors.
